Our Services

UT Service-Learning is available to offer the following services, but we are open to supporting service-learning in a range of other ways as well. We would love to hear ideas from faculty, staff, community partners, and students on how we might expand or adapt our current services to fit your needs.

Smart Communities Initiative

The Smart Communities Initiative (SCI) is a new interdisciplinary program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville which partners faculty and students across campus with one city, county, special district, or other municipal group each year to engage in real-world problem solving aimed at increasing the level of economic viability, environmental sustainability, and social integrity of the region.

Each semester, municipal partners will work with SCI staff to identify relevant projects for service-learning- or internship-based courses. Projects could focus on issues such as street-scale transportation improvement; infrastructure; brownfield redevelopment; public service or program assessment; energy incentives; civic engagement within a defined area; analysis of food, education, or healthcare policy; improvements in parks and public spaces; public relations campaigns; or economic opportunity projections. They could take the form of applied research (i.e. an economic feasibility report) or the design and development of some work product (i.e. a public relations campaign or branding brief).

Find out more about the SCI here.

Service-Learning Consultations

UT Service-Learning welcomes consultations to help faculty with course planning. Topics can include:

  • How to work effectively with community partners
  • How to prepare students for service
  • How to structure ongoing reflection throughout your course
  • How to assess student learning from service, and many more.

Depending on your course development needs, we also offer joint consultations with the Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center and Office of Information Technology. Email to learn more about our consultation services, or to set up an appointment.

Service-Learning Placement Assistance

UT Service-Learning is available to assist faculty or community organizations with service-learning placements upon requests. We will do our best to connect you with a partner that meets your needs, and with whom you can meet theirs. Please allow ample turnaround time for placement requests.

Processing of Student Insurance Payments

The University requires all students working with high-risk populations to carry liability insurance. The Office of Risk Management provides this insurance at a reduced rate ($32 for an annual policy) for all students. UT Service-Learning is available to process payments for this insurance, and to issue a receipt which will serve as confirmation of the policy. Email to arrange for a UTSL representative to process your students’ payments.

Pre-Service Student Training

UT Service-Learning is available to design and deliver pre-service trainings during regular course hours, or to develop training resources for your students. Trainings are customized to advance your designated student learning outcomes and community partner needs. Please email to request a pre-service training. Instructors requesting this service are asked to meet with us at least two weeks prior to the training to discuss their students’ service projects, as well as desired student learning outcomes and expectations.

Additionally, encourage your students to get involved in other programs designed to develop them as leaders and change-agents through the centers and offices listed on our Student Resources page and the student organizations listed on UT’s Get Involved program.

The Partnership Portal

The Partnership Portal is a collaborative effort between several offices across campus to communicate the needs of the community to the university in an ongoing, strategic, and purposeful way. Member offices are working to create a web representation of the portal, where community members can browse the university’s offerings, submit requests for partnerships, and stay abreast of current and upcoming events and opportunities.

The flagship campus of the University of Tennessee System and partner in the Tennessee Transfer Pathway.
